PALETTE Second review

Reviews are organised each year by European Commission to assess, regulate and valorise projects such as PALETTE. This evaluation activity is very important to enable the European Commission to measure the quality of the project and the level of achievement of its objectives in relation with the work plan. A review is also useful for European Commission and projects partners to revise this work plan taking into account the experiences and results.

A first review occurred last year on 3rd and 4th April. The second one is planned on 8th and 9th April, in Luxembourg. This second review is the occasion for the PALETTE partners to make a wrap-up of the achievements of the past year and to expose the orientations of the work for the third year to the project officer and reviewers. It also enables to reinforce collaboration and share of experience between the different partners.

New releases of Amaya, CoPe_it! and LimSee3

Amaya
This new Amaya version is the result of 8 months of work and collaboration with partners of the project. Amaya comes with a completely new user interface and five user interface profiles. This would allow each user to tailor the tool to his/her own needs, without being disturbed by unused features.
More information can be found here.

LimSee3
LimSee3 is a multimedia authoring tool that aims flexibility and easiness of use through extensive use of document templates. LimSee3 project is carried out at INRIA (French national research institute in computer science), in the WAM team. LimSee3 has reached version 1.0.5.
You can read more about it here.

CoPe_it!
This new version is based on the improvement the tool’s functionality, usability and performance, by elaborating issues related to the user and role management, awareness and communication, collaboration workspaces and objects, exploitation of legacy resources, interoperability with other tools, and the tool’s resource repository.
You can find more information here.

Focus on Deliverable - D.PAR.04: User Centered Description of PALETTE tools and services and first analysis of usability
The present deliverable aims at providing any CoP member, CoP animator or CoP mediator with the most complete view of the PALETTE tools and services. It gives a voice to the developer, the educationalist, the ergonomist, and of course the user to explain how they consider them. So, it suggests use cases, scenarios but also shows to the reader where are the obstacles of use (with the aim of avoiding a too quick discouragement on his/her part) and it provides real users’ testimonies.
You can access it on http://palette.ercim.org, “Deliverables” Section.

LimSee3 Trialling jointly organised by ePrep and INRIA Rhone-Alpes, Paris, January 24th, 2008

A LimSee3 trialling was jointly organised by ePrep and INRIA Rhône-Alpes at Lycée Henri IV, in Paris, on January 24th, 2008. On this occasion, ePrep CoP members were invited to build a multimedia module, including texts, pictures, video and audio recordings, thanks to the last version of LimSee3, a multimedia authoring tool based on extensive use of templates and adaptable user interface developed in the framework of the PALETTE project.

This trialling took place after several “design-in-use” sessions involving PALETTE researchers and ePrep CoP members for the production of a real multimedia history course for “Hypokhâgne” students at Lycée Henri IV. An example of such sessions was the recording of the course at Lycée Henri IV, on October 17th, 2007 (see the account here).

Thirteen participants attended the LimSee3 trialling on January 24th. The account of this trialling, available here in French, is written as a “distance training module” to allow all ePrep CoP members to “replay” the session and contribute to the design-in-use ongoing process.

Summer School EUMATHOS, Nantes, France, 18th-22th August 2008

The "e-learning and communities of practice summer school" aims at bringing together two worlds that generally ignore each other inside organisations. At the crossroad of e-learning and communities of practice you find two subjects:
- knowledge: creation, storage, diffusion, reuse
- group (or community) leadership: who, when, how and with which tools
Building bridges, links, sharing methods and tools, practices and ideas is our goal in this 1st Summer School chaired by Alex Mucchielli and Etienne Wenger. During the 5 days of this Summer School, conferences, testimonies and workshops will alternate.
More information can be found here.

ECTEL’08, Maastricht, The Netherlands, 17th-19th September 2008

With the previous two highly successful EC-TEL in 2006 and 2007 and about 200 participants each, this year EC-TEL 2008 invites all researchers across the different fields of TEL (education, psychology, computer science, economics...) to contribute to the scientific landscape of technology enhanced learning.
